Hiding the SSID stops the network name from appearing in casual scan lists. It is not strong security by itself. Skilled users can still discover hidden networks.
How to hide the SSID
- Log into the router.
- Open Wireless settings.
- Find SSID Broadcast, Hide SSID, or Visibility.
- Disable broadcast / enable hide.
- Save. Reconnect devices by manually entering the SSID and password.
Downsides
- Phones may reconnect less reliably
- Guests need the exact name typed in
- Security theater if the password is weak
