How to Factory Reset a Router (and Reset the Password)

A factory reset returns the router to out-of-box settings. Use it when you forgot the admin password, inherited a used router, or settings are badly misconfigured. It erases your custom Wi-Fi name, Wi-Fi password, and other changes.

Reset modem and router the gentle way first

1. Unplug the modem (or gateway) and the router for 30 seconds.
2. Power the modem first and wait until online lights are steady.
3. Power the router and wait two to three minutes.
4. Try logging in again with the usual gateway IP.

A power cycle often fixes freezes without wiping settings.

Factory reset with the reset button

1. Keep the router powered on.
2. Find the small reset hole or button on the back or bottom.
3. Press and hold with a paperclip for 10 to 15 seconds (some models need up to 30).
4. Release when lights flash, then wait for a full reboot.
5. Reconnect using the default Wi-Fi name and password on the sticker, if printed.
6. Log into the admin page with sticker defaults. Common gateways: 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1, 10.0.0.1.

Reset a router password without losing Wi-Fi (when possible)

If you still know the admin password, change it inside the admin panel under Administration or System. A factory reset is only required when you cannot sign in at all.

After the reset

1. Change the admin password immediately.
2. Set a new Wi-Fi name and strong password (generator).
3. Update firmware if the menu offers it.
4. Reconnect every device.
